Doug Roberts, Moundsville, WV

Most year’s, Doug can only bring a few boats to the show but this year he can exhibit the entire (almost entire) fleet virtually!

It’s a 600-mile trip from Doug’s home in Moundsville, WV to Georgetown, SC.  Since 2003, he has driven that distance every year (save for one due to a death in the family) to exhibit his handcrafted wooden canoes, kayaks and cradle boats at the Georgetown Wooden Boat Show.  That first year he won a Special Award for bringing the most boats to the show (six!) and since then he has won many Category Awards (click to view the archived winners).

Doug tries to have something new to display each year.  This year, it was to be a Viking cradle boat he made for his new grandson, Samuel.

The shields on the boat spell out Samuel’s name in nautical flags, while the end shields display the coat of arms from his maternal and paternal grandparents.

Doug’s wife Beth on their Fish Creek property.  “My wife Beth does not get to attend the event every year so I included a picture of her, so she could be there this year.”

Fun fact about Fish Creek: This is the creek that inspired local singer Brad Paisley to write the song “Mud On The Tires”.
